Heritage, History, and a Modern Spirit

In 2023 I took up temporary residence in a gorgeous gallery space in the Hay St Mall, Perth. Over the next twelve months, I was blown away by the overwhelming support of both locals and visitors for our exhibitions and ongoing displays. Approximately 100 artworks were sold dutring this time, both my own work and works by other artists that I hosted in the space. These artworks have reached into the daily lives of local people, visitors, and travellers.

This incredible achievement provided the inspiration and motivation to look further ahead.

To enable me to take purposeful steps toward new goals, the gallery doors closed on on Saturday 24th February 2024. Buoyed by the gallery’s success, my focus turned to building my art practice and, with my husband, managing an important restoration, renovation, and construction project in the heritage suburb of Guildford.

Our home was built by convicts in 1852 as quarters for Lieutenant Edmund DuCane. The image is of DuCane’s original sketch as he imagined life in Western Australia – this “damned, desolate place”, which he called home for the next several years while he established the Guildford convict settlement.

In 2025, after three years of research and planning, we began something important; we commenced building works to conserve and restore heritage integrity to the original house while modernising later extensions.

A key feature of the project is the construction of a brand new, modern art studio - opening new opportunities for my art practice and art experiences for clients in an amazing environment which fuses heritage and contemporary design.

Watch for future blog posts as we embark on this exciting adventure.
